What swimming requirements do you need to do the GAP year at Defence?
Q. My little brother is finishing Year 12 and is interested in doing the GAP year to figure out what he wants to do. What are the swimming requirements, as he does not know how to swim. What swimming techniques does he need to know? How do they test you? This is for the Australian Defence GAP year btw. Thank you.

A. The test involves all the recruits wearing a DPCU camouflage uniform over swimming suits. It's simple - they get in the pool, are ordered to swim a number of laps (Freestyle, though the front crawl stroke works the best), then have to tread water in one spot - I think for five minutes or so. You'll get a bit tired, but it's not that difficult and is quite achievable. Inevitably, some recruits do show up without knowing how to swim. It's best avoided, and perhaps your brother should try to get some basic swimming lessons done first. I remember them getting suited up like us, but not actually entering the pool. They still passed Kapooka with the rest of us, though.
