What caused the yellow fever outbreak in 1793? Refugees or slaves?
Q. I've searched around the internet a lot and have found two different stories about the source of the yellow fever outbreak in Philadelphia in 1793: it was brought there by refugees escaping political turmoil in the Caribbean, or it was brought over from Africa by the slave trade. Which is the most likely cause? This is for a history paper, so a source would be greatly appreciated.

A. You just read "Fever 1793", didn't ya? It was brought to the Port of Philadelphia by ships coming up from the Caribbean and transmitted to the populace by mosquitoes. It may have originated in Africa and accompanied the unfortunates who were forced to endure the dreadful Middle Passage as slaves. Any of the officers and crews of the various ships up from the islands, not just slaves, could carry the disease as they headed north. You'll find a list of sources mentioned in the back of Ms. Anderson's book "Fever 1793". I will be visiting our local middle school later this month as a historian to show the youngsters some of the means physicians Like Benjamin Rush used to attempt to control and cure the disease.
