Oil pressure?
Q. In my 99' S-10 the oil pressure fluctuates. When I accelerate the pressure goes up to 75 and stays there until I lay off the gas then it slowly decreases to 40 when idle. Is there something wrong? I have had the oil and filter changed and still have the fluctuation.
Asked by ryanstbound - Thu Jun 5 07:30:14 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The fluctuation is normal. The oil pump turns faster at higher RPMs therefore the pressure increases. The pressure sounds a bit high, but that should be okay as long as you are using the recommended oil weight.

A. When the vehicle is cold the pressure it high correct? After you run it the oil gets hot and thins some everything in the engine expands some, clearances can be more hot than when cold.. The bearings produce the oil pressure. The pump is designed to provide a volume of oil that is carried thought the engine through oil galley's. When the oil reaches a restriction like to bearing surfaces it slows the flow and causes back pressure on the incoming oil to the bearings. This causes the oil pressure to be higher. At an idle it only pumps the volume it can. When the RPM's are increased so is the volume of oil being pumped, thus you see the oil pressure increase on the guage. Have a manual guage screwed into the pressure port and check the cold,… [cont.]

How can I tell if my oil pressure is low?
Q. My oil pressure gauge does not work. I replaced the oil pressure switch on the driver side of the block(it had three wires) and it doesn't seem like it's working either cause the fuel pump still isn't pumping. Where would another oil pressure switch be on the car? Ho can I tell if I really do have low oil pressure, and what could cause it? It an auto. 1990 Camaro Rs V8.

A. no there's no other gage on the car,it would be rattling really loud right now if you didn't have any oil pressure at all, believe me ,this is something you,d know that wasn't there,if i were you id just take that new switch back,it may be defective, but don't drive the car until you can verify it does have oil pressure on it,good luck with it.

How do you check the oil pressure in a truck?
Q. I have a 1990 GMC Suburban and would like to know if there is a way to check the oil pump or the oil pressure. My gauge has started reading no pressure all of a sudden but the truck still rides great. At first it would drop when I stop at a light and go back up when I drive but now it just says 0 on the oil gauge. I have been told that it is the oil pump but I would like to check the pressure first. Can someone help me?

What would cause low oil pressure when idling or making a sharp turn?
Q. I have a 1995 chrysler lebaron. When I first start driving i'm fine, but after about 10 minutes my oil pressure will start going really low when i'm stopped at a light. sometimes my "check gauges" light will come on and the oil pressure gauge will dip below the L and then come back up. I get regular oil changes and do not need another one for 2500 miles. what could be the problem, and how much would it cost to fix it? I live in Florida in case that has anything to do with it. And when I make a sharp turn (like when i'm going into a parking space) the oil pressure almost always drops too low.

A. That's what oil pressure does. As the oil warms up the pressure drops. At low engine rpm's the pressure drops because the oil pump is engine driven.

How much does it cost to replace an oil pressure switch on a 2003 Buick Century?
Q. Had an oil leak so I took it to the mechanic and he said it was the oil pressure switch and he would do it for about $75-$100 for parts and labor. I looked up the part at Autozone and it is only $10. Should I do it myself? Is he overcharging me? I head it is easy to do.
Asked by CHoP - Wed May 14 01:40:31 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The switch is on the front of the motor right above the starter. The book only calls for a half an hour of labor, and GM lists the part at only $20 (cheap!). So say even if he was buying official GM parts and charging $100/hr for labor, you're still only at $70. I'd personally get on my back and grab that thing with a pair of pliers and turn it out of there. Just make sure to wrap the threads on the new one with some teflon tape or some pipe dope, otherwise the leak might even be worse.

Why does my oil pressure drop to zero at a stop in my Jeep Cherokee Sport?
Q. The car starts up, and the oil pressure, just fine. But after the car runs for a good while, 30 miles (45min driving), the oil pressure will drop to zero at a stop and my check gauges light comes on. When I accelerate, the oil pressure picks back up and is fine, until the next stop. The cycle resets once I turn the car off and let it sit. What is causing this? the last oil change was done 2 weeks ago. I used 10W-30. The mechanic mentioned no other problems with the car. I've added Casite Super Oil Treatment to the engine today. Could this help?

A. check your oil level and also when was your last oil change? the oil pressure usually drops off when there is not enough oil to register in the pan sensor. also the filter if the oil is old may not be allowing the oil to move freely throughout the engine.

What would cause a high normal oil pressure reading?
Q. My wife has a 2002 Dodge Durango. The check engine light just recently came on and the oil pressure guage is on high normal, right at the line. What are best and worst case scenarios, as well as most common?

A. could be like my old Fords, there is a voltage regulator behind the cluster that supplies voltage to the gauges. when it goes bad, most of the gauges, fuel and oil read high off and on. :) so it could be a faulty reading, get a pressure gauge and take a real reading.

What's it mean if oil pressure goes to zero on sharp turn?
Q. I have a 2000 Olds Bravada with 115k miles and when I make a sharp turn, the oil pressure goes low or all the way down, then back to normal when wheels are straight. What's this mean? I don't drive it much but my last oil change, I've used full synthetic oil. Will simply changing the oil correct this problem? Thanks. Thanks guys. A. you just unscrew it from the engine and replace it,if its doing that at idle that's more than likely the problem at least its the cheapest and the first thing to try to identify the real problem with it,that could also be an oil pump going bad on it,the pressure relief valve will cause that too happen in the oil pump, good luck.

A. Scott In answering your question all you have to do is buy an oil pressure socket removal tool and look carefully for a slit or cutout when buying this tool. With the engine cold carefully put the tool over the oil pressure switch and loosen it up all the way until you can remove it. Now you put the new switch in the same way as the old one but to make a good seal try a piece of teflon pipe thread tape and wrap it around the bottom threads in the switch and then carefully with the oil pressure socket put it in,do it slowly and try not to cross thread it in the engine or you will have a disaster on your hands tighten up snugly then start the engine and check for any oil leaks at the switch while the engine is running at the opening… [cont.]

Is it normal for oil pressure to be higher in an older car?
Q. I've got a 1999 Chevy Blazer with roughly 120,000 miles on it, and I've noticed that after my last few oil changes the oil pressure seems to be higher than normal. It's reading at about 60, which doesn't have me too concerned, but I wanted to see if anyone knew if this was normal for older cars? Thanks in advance!
Asked by aschryer0130 - Mon Nov 24 11:21:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It is normal that older cars have higher oil pressure. This is due to oil deposits that build up inside the engine and this will increase pressure in your sistem since fluids cannot flow so freely. This can be fixed with additives and/or a engine tune up which will be quite expensive.

A. most likely you are correct, the oil pressure sender is know to not work cold when they get old. the switch should be located on the drivers side of the engine, near the front bottom. you should be able to access it though the wheel well and a long extension.

A. Your engine idle is set too low, and the oil pump doesn't build enough pressure at low RPMs.

Can the low oil pressure typically associated with high-mileage engines be a problem?
Q. I have a 1987 Jeep Cherokee with over 215,000 miles on it. The oil pressure starts out at around 60psi, then decreases to around 30psi or so when the engine warms up. I've been told that this is normal with engines that have alot of miles on them, and have also been told that this should not cause any problems as long as I maintain the correct oil level in the vehicle. Is this true? Additional info (as requested by those who responded): I live in Virginia. I don't notice any smoke in the exhaust.

A. Yes, low oil pressure can be a serious problem. As clearances get larger and crankcase oils get heavier, the chance of a bearing surface going dry becomes significantly greater. Do you have any idea about the oil temperatures you are driving with? Have you tried a high mileage OIL , like CASTROL's high mileage oil, intended for older, well worn engines? It used to be that you could raise the oil pressure by inserting a longer, tougher spring in the oil pump. The tougher spring actually raises the max oil pressure relief point and will not do much for worn out bearing journals at low engine speeds. It is still worth a try if you use a high mileage oil at the same time as when you raise the oil pressure. A new oil pump will not likely… [cont.]
