What brand of golf clubs is best for a chick starting out?
Q. I want to start playing golf. I'm 22 years old and I've done a little research on golf clubs. I knew going into this that Callaway is probably the best brand, but its also really expensive. Is Wilson a good brand for Women's golf clubs? I want to spend no more than 2 or 3 hundred dollars on a complete set to start out with. Is that reasonable?
Asked by razzle - Wed Jun 3 16:47:12 2009 - - 3 Answers - 3 Comments

A. Hello future golfer. I have been playing golf for about 5 years now. I use a non-brand set of clubs (Gear 2 Golf) it cost for the whole set about 350.00. I know the name is generic but these clubs have a softer feel to them and allow some forgiveness to mistake shots. All I can say is care full with brand names around that price. They are mostly true-hit clubs( as in they have no forgiveness to them). Hope this helps, good luck in your search.

What makes golf one of the most expensive sports?
Q. Well i've never golf but i do watch all those people golfing on my telly, so it makes me wonder that whenever my uncle said that he went golfing the other weekend - my other relatives would be like WOW cuz well, golfing is expensive and the "rich" would always be the one that could afford to play for leisure for a sport like that. So why, why is golf expensive? Is it the golf set?
Asked by dandelion_girl - Sat Feb 7 12:16:31 2009 - - 14 Answers - 1 Comments

A. yes the equipment is very very expensive in to days economy. the golf course is built on many acres of prime real estate. the cost of maintaining a golf course extremely high. very expensive sport. prices are not going up. courses are afraid to raise cost due to economy. same applies to equipment companies. it helps to be rich. but the average person. can afford one round a month.

What type of golf ball responds best on the green?
Q. Although hard to believe, I compete in Professional MIni Golf tournaments around the country and was wondering what type of ball would perform best on the green (min golf course lol). I seem to like balls with a lower compression (Maxfli Noodle, Volvik Crystal) yet after reading up on the design of golf balls, I am not sure that this is the right decision. What type of balls (compression, three piece two piece etc.) would help increase my performance.
Asked by Dan W - Sat Jul 19 11:22:52 2008 - - 6 Answers - 4 Comments

A. hi. good question. but i think it would be wrong for people to recommend a specific type of a golf ball for you. the matter of fact is, in order to putt at your best, you need to depend on two things. feel and sound. maxfli noodle will feel smoother and a sound thats well... soft? and if you try any of the top flight golf balls, then you will find that it feels hard at impact and the noise it makes is a little louder. the bottomline is, EVERY golf balls feel and sound different. and the conclusion is that EVERY people have their preferences. phil mickelson said he changed his ball from titleist to callaway because he changed his putter. his putter was not very responsive to the contact so he wanted a ball that would make a louder… [cont.]

What type of golf clubs does a beginner need for a round of golf?
Q. I just finished up a golf class last week put on by ESPN in which they gave you a set of Nike Ignite clubs to get started, namely; 4-9 irons, pw, 3-hybrid and a putter. I added a cheap driver (which I'm planning on upgrading to a Nike Summo) and a Wilson 58 deg sand wedge as well. I have played the past two months with this set and feel that I may need more fairway clubs especially for the 5 pars. I'm getting mixed up between some saying I need a 3 and a 5 wood while others say I need 5, 7 and 9 wood. As well, I'm mixed up whether I should get hybrids (like the #3 that I have) to take the place of the woods. Does anyone have suggestions on what I should get to complete my set? BTW, I do like wedges and would like to add either a LW… [cont.]
Asked by GRUMP - Wed Sep 26 10:55:27 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The ideal set for the intermediate golfer would start with Game Improvement irons. You still need forgiveness but you'd also like a little more feel and control. If you tend to hit your irons well you might be ready to consider a regular 4 iron, otherwise stay with your hybrid 4. For your distance clubs add a little less loft on those fairway woods and hybrids to maximize distance. You might be ready to drop your 5 hybrid and replace it with a 3 hybrid. Your driver is still oversized with about 10-12 degrees of loft to maximize distance and accuracy. Shaft selections may be the most important component. You want a shaft that matches your swing speed and ball flight requirements. Perhaps a draw bias to help get the drive moving a little… [cont.]

What are the best golf courses to play in the Atlanta area?
Q. I'm a huge golfer and am visiting Atlanta to attend the final four in late march and early April of this year. I want to golf a couple of the best courses in the area. Price is no concern. Obviously it would be great to golf Augusta National but that is most likely impossible as it is a very private club. What is the dress code for playing golf during the summer on a golf course?
Q. My husband and I are getting interested in golf and we would like to know what the dress code is for golf courses during the summer. Thanks in advance.
Asked by kissyh14 - Sun Apr 13 21:40:33 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It depends upon the golf course you play. Some local public courses have no dress code (just decent). Most expensive courses or country clubs require long slacks and pull over shirts with collars, usually no jeans, halters, or short shorts. You do need regular golf shoes, the usual golf equipment, and some kind of cap or hat. It's a fun game. Learn and have fun. You'll meet many nice and polite people.

A. There's two basic constructions of golf balls: two-piece and multi-layered (used to be three-piece, but some companies have four layers- Taylormade has a five layered ball!). Two-piece balls have a core and a cover. The cover is generally made out of Surlyn (or Ionomer), while the core is a solid plastic and/or rubber mix. Bridgestone's e5 is the lone exception: a two-piece ball with a urethane cover. They are generally billed as "distance" balls, though robot testing by Golf Magazine has proven that there's only a 5-7 yard difference between all golf balls (at 95 mph swing speed). Multi-layered balls have a core, mantle and cover. The models with four layers have different names for the 4th layer (dual-core, inner mantle/outer… [cont.]

A. in Fantasy Golf, a golfer can receive a maximum of 20 fantasy points in each round of a tournament. The golfer with the lowest real-life score in A Round receives 20 points. Other golfers receive 2 fewer points for every stroke they finish behind the leader (e.g., a golfer 1 stroke back for the round receives 18 points, a golfer 2 strokes back gets 16. Golfers 10 or more strokes back receive 0 points). You receive the total points earned by all active golfers on your team in each round provided that they haven't already been active in 10 tournaments You do not receive points for golfers in a non-activated (reserve) position in your lineup. I have a background in Civil Engineering so I understand the importance of drainage and storm water detention. Just wondering if anyone out there can give me a little direction. Thanks in advance.
Asked by Ginger - Tue Sep 15 11:52:44 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The design of a golf course requires collaboration between many disciplines. This involves mostly civil engineers and landscape architects. As you stated, civil engineers are mainly responsible for designing the drainage of the overall site. They will also be responsible for land reclamation and geotechnical assessments. On the other hand, the landscape architects are responsible for designing the contours of the site in order to tailor for the varying difficulties of the holes of the course, as well as the placement of lakes and trees. Having said all that, I doubt that golf design companies directly employ civil engineers, rather they employ the landscape architects. They in turn offer contracts with consultancies for the design of… [cont.]

How do Professional Golf caddies measure distances to the hole during a tournament round?
Q. I havent seen any caddy carry a golf gps or one of those radar assisted measuring devices to calculate the distances to a particular hole. All they seem to carry is a notepad.. So do they have electronic devices to assist them and we just dont see them use it on television coverage or do they follow some other method?? Or is it a combination of both?? Asked by Firefly - Wed Aug 5 02:44:15 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They use an old-school yardage book created for the tournament. Typically, the caddies will buy said yardage book before the tournament and then walk the course to verify yardages and add yardages to/from specific points. They might use a rangefinder/GPS during practice rounds but they're verboten during tournament rounds. Either way, the caddie is still walking the course on his own at least once before Thursday. The players/caddies are given pin sheets which show distances to the hole...it's a crude drawing of the green with two numbers (one from either the front or back, and one from either the left or right side). The caddie will always have that yardage book with him/her for the tournament because of the copious notes that they… [cont.]
