How many targets can a F-22 Raptor or Eurofighter Typhoon track and engage?
Q. I know that an aircraft like the Su-30 can track 15 targets and simultaneously engage 4, how does the Raptor and/or the Eurofighter Typhoon compare?
Asked by Dan - Fri Oct 24 20:46:47 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The Su30 can allegedly track 15 and engage 4. I can tell you from experience that Russian claims about their aircraft are...not quite on the money. In fairness, they're trying to make sales. AFA the F22, the exact capabilities of its Low-Probability-of-Interc ept (LPI) radar are very close hold. However, knowing some guys who tested the firecontrol system in the Eagle, I can say it's at LEAST as capable as the Su's. You're right I didn't pilot the aircraft. I was the brains. I did almost 6 years in the E model, then transitioned to Weasels. So yes I'm a WSO and a Weasel, most guys are. Yes, I know quite a bit about the air/air realm and SEAD.

A. nowadays, its BVR combat 95% of the time unless opposing forces purposely merged. having said that, objectively, the USAF, USN, and USMC have way more assets than any other nation or NATO. Assets are anything from cargo planes, fighters, attack aircraft, AWACS, satellites, cruise missiles, special forces, aerial refueling aircraft, operatives on the ground, etc etc. that in addition to all the research, investment and whatnot going into long range missiles these days, I think the F-22 would win easily at BVR. There has been discussion that the Typhoon can use its FLIR to see the raptor's heat signature but that only works if the curvature of the earth isn't hiding the raptor. Eurofighter Typhoon versus Dassault Rafale which one is a more potent combat aircraft?
Q. I would like to hear your opinions, not the facts.

A. Opinion are like... well you know. While opinions are full of the same stuff they are also far less useful. Facts are what count and if you don't want to hear them then why bother asking the question. All you will get is uneducated and biased opinion with French responders going for the Rafale and Brits and German's going for Eurofighter. Its a complete waste of time. PS Only the RAF call Eurofighter the Typhoon.

What is the protruding rod's purpose located above and between the two engines on the eurofighter typhoon?
Q. I know that the braking parachute is part of the mechanism however the rod has a radiation warning on it. Maybe a reward facing radar?
Asked by Bradders - Sun Jan 25 07:25:56 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That component of the aircraft is part of the Missile Approach Warner (MAW) system. "Although the goal of any fighter pilot is to remove an enemy before they have fired there will of course be occasions when this is not the case. To enable tracking of such missile launches the DASS incorporates three Missile Approach Warners (MAW), one each in the port and starboard wing roots (near the cockpit) and one in the rear fuselage (near the tail). The units are derived from the Plessey PVS2000 MAW which utilises an active, pulse-doppler radar for detection." Go here for more great information on the Typhoon and don't miss the last item on the page. Kinda nifty, in a Euro sort of way:

Should Australia buy the Eurofighter Typhoon?
Q. The Australian government is intrested in buying the F-22 Raptor off the Americans, however its uncertain if it can. Here's an alternative - what about this awesome looking machine! I really like it it sounds effective to keep Australia and it would be awesome in fly-bys at airshows. What do you think? Is it an option worth looking at?

A. Firstly, that one guy makes a good point about the F-111's. They are getting pretty aged. The Aardvark was never intended to be used as long as it has been, but you guys in Australia have done wonders for them, keeping them updated and all... I could see why the woman from the UK would recommend the Eurofighter Typhoon, as it IS build in the EU and UK. But the Eurofighter is missing one VERY important thing; Stealth Capability. The F-22 IS a stealth ASF, and it has some VERY good features, but even THAT aircraft are not worth any significant investment, as the age of piloted combat aircraft comes to an end. A. Its a mechanically swept antenna. Its one of the finest refinements of the mechanical antennas, so it comes pretty close in practical areas where the performance of an AESA can be compared. The Caesar is AESA, you can easily find the AESA in the name itself.

What's better, the F-22 Raptor or the Eurofighter Typhoon?
Q. or is there a better fighter
Asked by Lt. Dan - Wed Aug 30 11:53:58 2006 - - 19 Answers - 0 Comments
A. That depends on what you want. The F-22 is a dedicated air supieriority plane (it kills other planes) and that's it (but it's really good at it). America is rich, so it can get another plane to do another job if needed. The Typhoon can do that job, but also others (like recon, small bombing runs, wild weasel attacks, etc) but it dosen't do air superitority as well as the F-22. But the Europeans aren't as rich, so they need to have a plane that can do many jobs.

A. One on one? Just the plane itself? The Eurofighter is probably better. After all, the Eurofighter is a gen 4.5 fighter, while the F-15 is still a gen 4. HOWEVER, the singular characteristics of an aircraft don't make it dominant. American missiles are better, the C2 is better, the countermeasures are better, and the over the horizon vision is better. Those things mean that in a REAL war, even a squadron of eurofighters would be hard pressed to take down a squadron of F-15s

A. Like all of these questions the answer is "that depends". Strictly in air-to-air combat the F-22's low-signatures and AESA radar give it an advantage but it is saddled with what are now rather dated air-to-air weapons - AMRAAM and AIM-9X. Eurofighter has pretty low signatures from the front but its radar technology is slightly behind F-22 (for a few more years anyway) and it will soon sport more advanced air-to-air weapons such as Meteor. Then again, Eurofighter has considerably greater multi-role capability than the F-22 which obviously would make it more attractive to forces that require that kind of capability. Eurofighter can operate easily from remote bases with minimal support (the rapid deployment role) which the F-22 can… [cont.]

A. As long as you don't mount anything on the hardpoints (read: "missile bits"), then technically yes you can do whatever you want. However, the companies (and host governments) involved might refuse to allow the sale for security reasons etc. Also, due to a massive backlog of military orders, you would have to wait several years to take delivery of the plane.

A. Tactically the Eurofighter is a more capable aircraft; but you can get a lot more (volume) SU-35's for your buck. Neither has seen combat - the proving ground for this type of aircraft. I believe from what I have seen the Eurofighter will completely outclass the SU-35 should they ever go up against each other.

A. Neither. They are very different aircraft designed to very different requirements to suit different customer needs. This is why for several years BAe was marketing both aircraft. They don't appeal to the same customer.
