The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America.

Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed there in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia).

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea.

Geo-politically, the West Indies are usually regarded as a sub-region of North America and are organized into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. Between January 3, 1958, to May 31, 1962, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies.

The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact.

How would you come out to Caribbean homophobic parents?
Q. I have many friends with this dilemma, believe it or not Brooklyn NY has a sizable gay and lesbian population and most of these people are semi-closeted. This topic has "never" come up on any talk show, radio show, that I am aware of, but these people are born of old school British rule West Indian/Caribbean parents who'd rather disown you than to accept any part of a gay lifestyle. Some Hispanics are also pre-disposed to this attitude within their culture.

A. i hate when Caribbean people attribute their backwoods mentality to British influence. The British are nowhere near as homophobic as the West Indians...that's their own brand of isolated ignorance. Anyway besides that, for the time being each individual has to take it on a case by case basis. Since the Caribbean is basically one giant hell-hole of homophobia, we have to take baby steps. If the family seems open-minded then tell them. if they seem like they will disown you or chop you up with a machete...then don't tell them.

How do I start planning a trip to the Caribbean?
Q. My boyfriend and I want to go somewhere in the Caribbean. I've been to St. Thomas and St. John and loved it but would like to go somewhere else. We are looking to go in February or March 2008 for at least 4 nights. Where can we get a good deal? Where should we go and why? Where do we start!?! It's a little overwhelming and we are not sure who to trust and where is the best.

A. St. Lucia, its very beautiful, affordable and the locals are very friendly. Puerto Rico is also nice, friendly with a lot of culture and history. Dominican Republic has some good parts, and is very affordable, as does Jamaica. St. Kitts and Nevis I hear is very beautiful, that's actually my next destination. Also you may want to consider Mexico, very affordable. A lot of the major airlines offer vacation packages. What I normally do is check the major airlines to see what the average flight prices are for locations I am considering, then I see what they offer for packages. Also I check the countries tourism sites for lists of accommodations, double check with tripadvisor.com to weed out the bad ones, and get rate requests for rooms. After… [cont.]
