Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With a billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 61 territories, it accounts for about 14.72% of the World's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Not counting the disputed territory of Western Sahara, there are 53 countries, including Madagascar and various island groups, associated with the continent.

Africa, particularly central eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae tree (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago – including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to ca. 200,000 years ago.

Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.

I am traveling to Africa as a volunteer, does anybody have any fund raising ideas?
Q. I will be traveling to Ghana, Africa in May 2009 to assist in a health care setting. The problem is, the trip is going to cost about $4,000. Because I am a student, this is a bit of a problem for me. I am already planning on sending a letter to family and friends asking for their support; does anyone know of any grants or opportunities I could seek to help defray the cost?

A. You could get your friends and family to have a "benefit yard sale"/ You could ask some of your local churches for donations.

A. Kenya is providing the venue for prosecuting the pirates. Looking at a map of Somalia, the country is practically all coastline. There aren't really any African nations near it. Kenya and Eritrea, but their navies are quite small, mostly consisting of patrol boats. Ethiopia has no coast. Djibouti has its own issues, but provides bases for the US and other countries. That's pretty much it. The European countries and the US have economic interests, such as owning the tankers and ships sailing though the area.

Where would I start planning a pilgrimage to Africa to see the great apes?
Q. I have been a fan of apes & monkeys for many years, thanks in large part to Dianne Fosse and Jane Goodall. I have always wanted to travel to Africa to see them in their own habitat, along with spending time with the people. I would really enjoy learning about their culture and their views on things. Thanks for your help!
