From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the largest broadcasting organisation in the world. Its global headquarters are located in London and its main responsibility is to provide public service broadcasting in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. The BBC is an autonomous public service broadcaster that operates under a Royal Charter. Within the United Kingdom its work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee, which is charged to all United Kingdom households, companies and organisations using any type of equipment to record and/or receive live television broadcasts; the level of the fee is set annually by the British Government and agreed by Parliament. Outside the UK, the BBC World Service has provided services by direct broadcasting and re-transmission contracts by sound radio since the inauguration of the BBC Empire Service in December 1932, and more recently by television and online. Though sharing some of the facilities of the domestic services, particularly for news and current affairs output, the World Service has a separate Managing Director, and its operating costs are funded mainly by direct grants from the UK government. These grants are determined independently of the domestic licence fee. The Corporation's 'guaranteed' income from the licence fee and the World Service grants are supplemented by profits from commercial operations through a wholly owned subsidiary, BBC Worldwide Ltd. The company's activities include programme- and format-sales, magazines including Radio Times and book publishing. The BBC also earns additional income from selling certain programme-making services through BBC Studios and Post Production Ltd., formerly BBC Resources Ltd, another wholly owned trading subsidiary of the corporation. GNU Free Documentation License Why do the different BBC national radio stations sound so different acoustically? Q. (NOTE: This question is nothing to do with the content of the different stations). As a Radio 4 listener, I have noticed that the acoustic quality of sound, specifically speech, seems poorer on Radio 1 and, to a lesser extent, Radio 2 than it is on Radio 3 and 4 (I am not referring to the presenter's accents etc.). Is the BBC using inferior equipment or perhaps "dumbing down" the sound to give a pirate radio feel in order to attract younger listeners? Asked by mr.xenophilus - Thu Aug 27 17:57:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's probably due to compression of the dynamic range (companding) that is used to give a "bigger" sound to the station. This process is VERY evident (and intrusive, to me,) on Radio 1, but less-so Radio 2. Radio 3 would balk at such a travesty, whilst Radio 4, being all (well. mostly) speech does not need to use it much. Companding entails raising the amplitude of quiet sections of programme feed so that they are easier to pick out amongst ambient noise around a listener (e.g. in a car). It is a useful process that can enhance marginal communications channels, but its use in entertainment broadcasts is questionable. (Perhaps I should say its OVER use...) Q. Have the BBc upset him in some way, I seem to recall something, but not sure what. Asked by Graham G - Tue Aug 28 06:39:50 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. In Nov. of 2000, Sir Alex Ferguson, banned the BBC from post-match interviews after two broadcasters made critical remarks about his team. The breakdown has become increasingly noticeable and provoked complaints from viewers. The Match of the Day producer, Niall Sloane, is to meet United's new chief executive, Peter Kenyon, on Thursday to try to settle the dispute. Sir Alex imposed the ban because of remarks made by the broadcaster Pat Murphy in the Match of the Day magazine and passages in the Radio 5 Live commentator Alan Green's autobiography, which were critical of the team.
